Choosing a Digital Smart Lock for Your Home or Office
A digital smart lock removes keys from daily life. Choosing well comes down to how your household or team will use it, the door you are fitting it to and how you will handle the occasional dead battery.
Unlock methods
- Fingerprint — fast and convenient for regular users.
- PIN code — useful for staff, guests and tenants; codes can be changed easily.
- RFID card or tag — quick for offices and rentals.
- Mobile app — remote unlocking, temporary access and entry history.
Most households use two or three methods. Offices often combine cards with PIN codes.
Check your door first
Door material, thickness and the existing lock body decide which models fit. Wooden and metal doors usually accept mortise smart locks; some doors suit rim locks. Glass doors need specific hardware. A quick check before buying avoids returns and poor fitting.
Batteries and emergency access
Smart locks run on batteries and warn you in advance when they are low. Make sure you know the emergency option — a mechanical key, an external power port or both — and keep it accessible.
Security features worth having
- Auto-lock after the door closes
- Tamper and wrong-attempt alarms
- Privacy mode to block other codes when you are inside
- Entry logs, especially for rentals and offices
Society and intercom integration
If your housing society uses MyGate, a MyGate-compatible lock can link door access with visitor management. Smart locks can also work alongside video door phones so you can see a visitor and unlock from the same place.
Installation matters
A well-chosen lock that is badly aligned will jam and drain batteries. Professional fitting, user enrolment and a short handover make day-to-day use smooth.
