Office Network Basics: Cabling, Wi-Fi Access Points and NAS Backup
Most office IT problems trace back to the same few causes: untidy cabling, a single consumer router trying to cover a whole floor, and files with no reliable backup. Getting the foundations right saves time every day.
Structured cabling
Structured cabling runs from each desk, camera or access point back to a central rack, terminating on a patch panel. Every point is labelled, so faults can be traced quickly and moves are simple. Plan spare points for growth.
Switching and routing
A managed switch connects your devices and can separate traffic into VLANs — for example staff, guests, CCTV and phones. PoE switches power cameras, phones and access points over the network cable. A business-grade firewall or router protects the connection to the internet and can provide secure remote access.
Wi-Fi access points
One router in a corner rarely covers an office. Ceiling-mounted access points, placed after a coverage plan, give consistent signal. Managed systems let devices move between access points smoothly and keep a separate guest network away from company devices.
NAS storage and backup
A NAS (network-attached storage) gives your team a shared place for files with permissions by user or department. Use drive redundancy (RAID) to protect against a single disk failure — but remember RAID is not a backup. Add scheduled backups to a second device or the cloud, and test restoring files occasionally.
Computers and peripherals
Standardising laptops and desktops, keeping an asset list and tracking warranties makes support far easier. Retail and F&B sites should plan POS terminals and printers alongside the network.
Security habits
- Change default passwords on every device
- Keep firmware and operating systems updated
- Give each user their own login
- Limit remote access to what is necessary
Planning a new office
Bring IT into the fit-out early. Data points, rack location, ceiling access for Wi-Fi and power backup are far easier to plan before false ceilings and finishes go in.
