PoE switch budget calculator
Add up the power your IP cameras, access points and phones draw, and see the PoE budget, ports and standard your switch needs.
How it’s calculated
The method, in plain terms.
Total load = number of each device × its maximum draw. We add 25% headroom so the switch is not running at its limit, and suggest the next standard port count with at least one spare port.
- 802.3af (PoE) — up to 15.4 W per port.
- 802.3at (PoE+) — up to 30 W per port.
- 802.3bt (PoE++) — up to 60 W (Type 3) or 90 W (Type 4) per port.
Cable runs over 100 m need PoE extenders or a switch closer to the devices.
How much power does an IP camera use?
Typical fixed IP cameras draw about 4–8 W, more with strong IR or heaters. PTZ cameras can draw 25 W or more. Always check the datasheet.
What is a PoE budget?
The total power a PoE switch can deliver across all its ports at once. It must exceed the combined draw of connected devices.
Can I mix PoE and PoE+ devices on one switch?
Yes. A PoE+ switch powers both, as long as the total budget and per-port limits are respected.
What is the maximum PoE cable length?
Standard Ethernet PoE runs are limited to 100 metres; beyond that use extenders or fibre with a local switch.
