UPS & battery backup calculator

Keep cameras recording and the network running through power cuts — estimate the UPS size and battery capacity you need.

How it’s calculated

The method, in plain terms.

Load (W) is the sum of all connected equipment. VA = load ÷ 0.8 power factor × 1.25 headroom, rounded up to a standard UPS size.

Battery Ah = load × hours ÷ (bank voltage × 0.85 inverter efficiency × 0.8 usable capacity). A 24 V bank is two 12 V batteries in series, each of that Ah rating.

  • PoE cameras draw power through the switch — include them in the switch figure or the camera line, not both.
  • Battery capacity falls with age and heat; plan replacement every few years.

UPS & Battery Backup Calculator — FAQs

Can’t find what you need? Ask us directly

What size UPS do I need for CCTV?

Add the wattage of your NVR, cameras (or PoE switch) and network equipment, then choose a UPS with about 25% more capacity than the load in VA. The calculator does this for you.

How long will a UPS run my CCTV system?

It depends on the load and battery capacity. Larger external battery banks extend backup time; the calculator estimates the Ah needed for your target.

Should cameras and the NVR be on the same UPS?

Yes — if cameras lose power, the recorder has nothing to record. Keep the switch and router on it too for remote viewing.

Do you supply and install UPS systems?

Yes, as part of CCTV, network and AMC projects.
